  1. “DH – If someone buys new contruction, there is an expectation that the building will not have drafty windows. I would be pissed and it would not matter if I paid $100,000 or $1,000,000 for the property.”

    i think that’s a silly expectation.

that’s why you have inspections before closing, regardless of how old the bldg is.

  2. “Then you and I must run in different social circles. I know boatloads of retirees who have moved to places like Florida for just that reason.”

The retirees I know who moved to Florida, moved for the climate.

The retirees I know who moved to Florida, moved for the climate.

  4. Lech – You should not have gotten involved in the couch purchase. You showed interest in how the house is decorated. Going forward when Mrs Lech wants your opionion, just say “whatever makes you happy honey”

You no longer pay NYC income tax but, now you have pretty high property taxes. Is you overall tax burden reduced by the move?

  5. “Then you and I must run in different social circles. I know boatloads of retirees who have moved to places like Florida for just that reason.”

I actually know very few retirees who have moved to different states at all.
I think this may be more of a geographical thing, since I have always lived in warmer climates until last year.

If you are going to move when you retire and have a lot of assets, I can see estate taxes having a role.

However, I think the number of people in this situation compared to the total population of the country would be negligible.

  6. Lech, fault is on you for being so naive. There was a reason why we were suggestion other stuff you would have to get if you got that real formal looking couch – ie rugs, fancy silver tea/coffee/creamer set, fancy framed wall art,….
