“Oh, my! In 1940, mebbe. Not now. Chinese have a generational advantage — too many are still adherents of the old ways. All our best hagglers are long gone. ”
Sad to see the old traditions go. (I wish they had taken herring in cream sauce with them).
M4L- Gem merely posited the question. I suggested a throwdown with you as you are THE Chinaman. But Slopey posits that my people are perhaps no longer world class in the haggling business so we sadly pass the baton to you. 🙁
“Is the business you describe where you direct UPS AFTER they have attempted delivery. OR is it where you initially ask the retailer to send the package??”

The latter.
Here is how it works:
-first you go to Active Tranport and register with them – it’s free.
-after you register, they will provide you with a specific address to use for the deliveries of your packages to them.
-when you make an on-line purchase, you use the address that Active Tranport provided to you. When Active receives the package, they call you up to let you know.
-when you pick up your package, you pay them $1 or $2.
It’s a great service. No need to be home, cuts down on theft, etc.
That’s good to know Benson, but I never get to that level of interaction with UPS on some of the deliveries. (The cheapie level doesn’t give you the choice…apparantly).

Speaking of jewish, now that my middle kid is going to pre-k at the jewish community center we have to pack him a kosher lunch every day. The jackal family kitchen is going kosher!!! Well at least it is from 7:30 to 7:35 every morning. Or at least we try our best or something close to it.
DeLepp, once upon a time, if you got a UPS delivery, the sellers would use the 3 attempts level of service (didn’t even know there was more than one level until recently).
Then if you weren’t there (of course, we are NEVER there) you get a chance to tell them what to do. Also I usually would get notification by email so I could leave instructions for the guy so we didn’t have to do the yellow sticky paper thing.
So now if the retailer pays for dirt cheap rum ball service level, you get two choices (at the discretion of the UPS guy): He throws it out there and it gets stolen rained on, etc. OR he puts a sticky on your door saying final attempt and you get to hoof it to bumf@#k Brooklyn.
have to say, our UPS guys are sweethearts. And very good about packages. Fedex and USPS- not so much.
Why- try the Geek Squad. Allstar rings a bell but I can’t remember if for good or bad. What’s your problem?

Benson, that is a great idea!!! Excellent. I am definately going to do this. Do they send you an email or let you know that a package is there?
