No cellphone, no cable (till I got a roomate who pays for it), had a 20 year old TV till it died last year. I bought a new 19″ TV for $160.00.

I cut my hair myself and do my own mani-pedi.

And look at you now with your hot young Boy Toy armcandy!!!!

right – but the theme still remains – most immigrants do well (or at least better than if they remained in their home countries) their children tend to do better either by obtaining higher education or getting better paid jobs b/c of the work ethic instilled – it’s then the next generation of now Americans that tend to fall victim to the trappings of consumerism and/or have trouble sustaining the success of their parents and or grandparents….

  3. “Make them earn their own money.”

yeah–I’m all for early employment as long as it’s not getting in the way of school. the work ethic issue is just ONE of the things that terrifies me about having kids.

  4. “But I always expected that I could earn more/work. It was a shock to lose my job, and at my age it wasn’t easy to find new work.

C’est la vie. I will rebuild!”

Being unemployed at this stage in my life was not part of my master plan but, like you I will re-build.

  5. My story is the same. My mother’s father died 6 months after they got here, leaving my grandmother to raise twins and try to find a way to bring my 2 older aunts here.Only one aunt managed to come, the other died in the Holocaust. My parents expected us to work and we did, plus got college scholarships.

I got a degree in something I loved and expected to be working in a university. Unfortunately life happens. My saving grace was teaching myself the computer. I’m slowly rebuilding but my situation is like cobble’s.

  6. Great story, Kens. Also BedStyMaven about your smart hardworking mother. About the erstwhile Governor of Alaska, I took a vow of silence until December 2012. Doesn’t mean I can’t roll my eyes.

  7. “I cut my hair myself and do my own mani-pedi.”

I don’t cut my own hair (I tried it once, MASSIVE FAIL!!!), but I do my own mani-pedi’s lately since I can’t afford not to. Although in the spring/summer/sandal season, I may spring for a pedi, cause it feels so nice!

LET ME BE CLEAR ABOUT THIS. YOU FREAKIN RULE.
