  1. My time in Japan was great but at times (especially in the beginning) I used to get homesick. I wanted to speak English and eat cheese.

A woman I knew was in the military as a language expert (murky details re her discharge but who’s asking) and she had special privledges at the Sanno, a US military hotel/compound in Tokyo.

I LOVED going there. I saw the latest American movies, ate real hamburgers and bought American cosmetics without taking out a bank loan. Also I could use some of the US currency I had in my house. It felt like Indiana in a building complex in the middle of Tokyo.

^^^^Rambling recollection about US military bases overseas….. We are going to have to evaluate all of them someday (when we get to Social Security, Medicare, and Farmer support programs).

  2. “Why are we the ONLY country that has military bases located in different countries”

UK has a few overseas bases, mostly in Germany, although there are plans to close those down. Think France also has overseas bases but not sure,

  3. gem…in Europe, it’s part of NATO. In Japan, they are still not allowed to have a real military so we are still there, at their invitation, to protect.

As China continues to become more aggressive militarilly, more of Asia actually welcomes us. As does India.

  4. Dibs – are you being serious or snarky? I kinda thought that was the reason (hence bases in places like Germany/Japan etc) but at this stage – don’t those countries want us Out? and do we pay those countries for the use of that land? Also do we protect those countries from attacks?
Thanks for replying – just curious!

  5. More things to do in New York City?

    Alright here’s some more,

    -Explore Governor’s Island

-Golf Forest Park or Marine Park (public courses)
tomorrow’s weather will be perfect for golf.

-Scuba lessons (Ave. U has a scuba training school)

-Cathedral of St. John the Devine (UWS)

-Bear Mountain State Park (yes, it’s out of NYC but not that far)

    -Long Island’s North Fork

-One of my favorites; Drive to Montauk and take the ferry to Block Island. Awesome weekend.

    :o)
