legion- perhaps the answer is that bacteria are the real aliens and invented us. Either that or the moose is and that rack on his head is an extremely complex, organic broadcasting system that beams out our radio transmissions into the waiting moosership.
There is no single theory of evolution. Scientists are piecing together the story of the development of life piece by piece. It’s a very long story with a lot of pieces to it. Some things we are quite sure about. Some things are highly uncertain at this stage. It’s not about believing in the theory of evolution; it’s about recognizing the limitatiosn of what we know and, if one chooses, believing that there is some design to the whole thing. I do not choose to believe that, as I have no basis for doing so. But for the same reason I cannot tell someone who believes it that they are wrong.
Legion- I don’t have “absolute certainty”, but I do put more credence in evolution than I do in creationism, because evolution is based in evidence, not faith. Scientists may not have the correct analysis, but they are basing it on something other than, ‘I believe”.
Here’s one other powerful idea,
Why Evolution at all?
Bacteria seem to have perfected the reproduction thing and have been around for billions of years.
Why the continued evolutionary pressure when the most basic form of life already has the idea down pat?
“What I am trying to tell you is that the theory of evolution is a very weak theory at this point and it gets cited as if it was “true”.”
In whose opinion is it “weak?” I agree people are uncomfortable about knowing so little of our origins but I think you’re wrong to claim there is a “highly exaggerated faith” in it. I keep point out that there is a huge amount of scientific data that supports the theory of evolution, but yo seem to be rejecting that. So we are at odds and probably will remain so.

Bxgrl, I think the most that can be said about the data is that it doesn’t contradict the theory of evoloution.
Lech has it right in that the further back you go the less likely it seems.
By the time you get back to “primordial soup” you are in the realm of total guess work.
I am still eagerly awaiting your data that directly supports the theory of evolution.
The American Museum of Natural History has a pretty cool exhibit on human origins and related topics.
They also have have their early vertebrates/dinosaur/prehistoric mammal fossil collections organized by cladistics (basically evolutionary branches).
I think it is quite cool to see how different attributes developed over time.

“One less thing for our social director to have to do.”
I heard that. “Please don’t talk about me . . . when I’m gone.”
I hear you lech,

etson, while you are there, please send me an email to

BTW- I use “primordial soup” half jokingly to describe the environment at that time however, this is a more up to date theory: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2010/02/100202101245.htm
