Citigroup May Move 400 Jobs to N.J.
Citigroup is considering moving as many as 400 jobs from New York to Jersey City, as New Jersey’s Economic Development Authority on Tuesday approved a $12.3 million subsidy package in an effort to woo the Manhattan-based bank.

The potential expansion in New Jersey is the latest jab in the years-long battle between New York and New Jersey over jobs. The two states have each used subsidies to woo and retain companies. In recent years, Jersey City has become a center for back-office jobs, attracting financial firms including Goldman Sachs. New York has fought back by luring firms to downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City to compete with the low rents offered across the Hudson.
Recent incentive deals offered by the Christie administration, have frustrated officials in the Bloomberg administration and city business groups, who criticize the state’s munificence for companies amid strained fiscal times. Last month, the state approved a $102.4 million incentive package to move Panasonic from Seacaucus to Newark, part of an effort to retain the employer’s 800 jobs in the state.
“The state had no money to go forward with the ARC tunnel to accommodate commuters moving between the states,” said Kathryn Wylde, president of the Partnership for New York City, referring to the Christie administration’s decision to cancel a planned commuter rail tunnel. “I guess they needed every nickel to bribe companies to move jobs to the other side of the river.”
