yeah i thought it was 7 years too, but my grandmother was using that number under my grandfather’s name well into 2007 before so i guess it’s still under 7 years
i made the unfortunate mistake of contacting a private student loan company after 7 years to make good on that loan :-/ turns out since 7 years passed i wouldnt have had to pay it as it was already in collections for over 7 years and i went off the grid. (private loans are different than govt student loans which you HAVE to pay).
oh well, i do believe in paying your debts so i shouldnt kick myself in the ass too hard about that mistake.
Rob – agree with Bxgrl. Also do not admit to the collection agency this is your debt or might be your debt. I also believe they only have 7 years to collect a debt not 10….
ah thanks, so it’s based on SS’s? okay that is good to know, im most certain this was their phone number tho in jersey. i never had any verizon phone service under my name in nj, or any phone service under my name really.
question tho, if it turns out to be my grandfather do i tell them he isnt alive anymore? will they believe me?
rob- call the collection agency and double check that yo are the person its supposed to go to. i had that problem with a collection agency for a con ed bill that wasn’t mine. i finally told them to tell me the social security number of the person they were looking for and it wasn’t mine. I told them to stop calling me because it was harassment and I was not the person they were looking for. Collection agencies are all about scaring you into paying bills, whether or not you’re the person who owes them money..

rob – Don’t indicate to them that you know who it is/was – just let them know it’s not you.

Yes, rob, what bxgrl said. DO NOT tell them your SS# but verify the one they are using.

No, rf, I have private health insurance, through my partner’s employer. I’m pretty sure it’s what they refer to as a “Cadillac” plan.
I pay nothing.
So Dave, do you get your health insurance through a teat of a state government?
uh b iff, that would depend on which suburb. youve seen the real housewives of atlanta, right? but i guess you do have a point
