CMU!!!!!
WTF? I saw that nasty attack at me on the block party thread!
FYI – I AM A WOMAN! not a MAN, so stop calling me a man. I am also 35 and not 70. Also – I don’t live in my car. I just own a nice car that I enjoy driving – GASP!
Am thrilled for you that you had such a wonderful block party on Carroll street. Like I said too, we had a great block party on 15th street when we lived there but like others have said – most blocks remain EMPTY all day and yes it’s a pain in the ass to drivers who do have to be diverted all for the sake of 2 people sitting in their lawn chair in the middle of the block
Take women in the workplace for example. Of course they aren’t the same as men!!! Their emotional wiring is very different. In many ways better for particular tasks, in some ways worse. If you walk around pretending there is no difference you’re going to make mistakes or not use people to their potential.
So far (son is almost 13) I’ve never ever soft-pedaled any information. Honesty and directness I believe is the best (along with indoctrinating him into hating Republicans 😉 ). Since he had 2 classmates with lesbian mothers, and at least one family friend, the whole gay thing was never an issue. I talk him about ‘when’ he will smoke and try drugs, not ‘if’, just let me know. I try to impress on him that common sense and moderation are the most important thing.
It’s actually pretty fake how we’ve all been trained to pretend we don’t notice differences. That’s where I think the whole pc movement is desperately wrong. It’s exactly the wrong instinct to not notice differences. Among men and women, different races, different abilities. It’s OK to notice. It’s OK to talk about it.
gem- if they say something like that it doesn’t mean they don’t love you. It’s a comment on their perception that same sex parents are exotic and therefore “cool.”
I think kids notice differences in people, I mean, how could they not? They don’t make value judgements until they are influenced by others, be they parents, other kids, media, school, etc. I think a good parent needs to make sure all of that is processed and explained, but all in good time, and in the right way. Making a big deal out of it can sometimes make them think those differences are more important than they really are.

CMU – good point at 12:14. I am hoping I trust my gut and not get too persuaded by info overload.
