I would be take the extra 45 minutes each way and visit the winerys in the Santa Ynez Valley.

OOoooooo! Thanks Scott! now you’re talking my language. I love vineyards so I’ll try to talk my friends into doing a little excursion to Santa Ynez Valley. Any particular vineyards you like there? Any ones that give wine tours?

  2. “so can’t devote full day to Getty (which I’d want to do).”

Yes, I agree, a full day or two visits is best for Getty Center. Tour of the grounds/gardens is really worth it. We were only there for a few days, and it was my one request. We were there for about 4 hours, and did tour of grounds, and only saw a few galleries. Well worth it when you get the chance. Also, try for a clear day, the views are wonderful. : )

Haven’t been to the Villa— next trip!

  3. Thanks cobble. Been wanting to go to the Getty museum for a while but doubt I’ll make it this time around. Friends are not into museums and during the day I’ll have to go to a meeting here and there so can’t devote full day to Getty (which I’d want to do).

In terms of restaurants, my friends will be picking our dining choices. One of them is in high-end catering business so knows all the hot spots and the bartenders and hosts/waiters in loads of places so I suspect that we’ll be eating at some good spots and drinking for relatively free (which of course, rules!).

M4l, I am kinda with Randy on Knicks convo. There is already talks for a while of salary caps and if that happens, Knicks will be in pretty shitty position. Having 2 all starts wont solve anything. They’ll need to build a pretty decent team around them as well, which they don’t have now. Let’s see what the game against Bucks tomorrow will show. Then we can make further assumptions whether it was a smart move or not.

  4. I didn’t see your Yankee comment, Randi. Why do you feel the Yankees are the dark side? Are you from a long line of Brooklyn people who can’t find it in themselves to root for the Yankees? I have a friend who spent his whole life rooting against the Yankees (first Dodgers, then Mets which he now hates) so it was a natural transition for him to the Red Sox. Which I find perverse.

  5. Kensingtonian,
Some other touristy things in LA you might have already seen:
Venice Boardwalk, Getty Center, Getty Villa (think you need tickets in advance), La Brea Tar Pits, Peterson Automotive museum.
I also like getting into the mountains for short hikes. Franklin Canyon is a popular one that includes a waterfall.
If you like movie history, slightly farther out there is Paramount Ranch and Corriganville park.

If I had to pick between Santa Barbara and Palm Springs, it would be Santa Barbara. They have a nice downtown/pier shopping and resteraunt district. Instead of Santa Barbara, I would be take the extra 45 minutes each way and visit the winerys in the Santa Ynez Valley.

  6. “M4L, why won’t you become a Yankee fan?”

i don’t think one can become a yankee fan. unless you are born with that curse it is impossible to go to the dark side. there is nothing to like about that team. yuck.

  7. I think that this is going to be an exciting baseball season. Assuming that the Boston Red Sox stay healthy, and with the new pitching rotation in Philly and the so so pitching on the Yankees, the Yankees are really going to have to come together as a team and last year’s underachievers (who are not categorically underachievers) will have to get their act together.

I can’t wait. I have several friends here who are Red Sox fans (see how OPEN MINDED I am with my friends) and will try to go to as many as those games as possible. It will be fun!!

M4L, why won’t you become a Yankee fan?

  8. i’m pretty sure the new agreement is going to favor the team owners/league over the players. the current system is unsustainable, i think the NBA is losing like 200 million a year! plus everyone knows these guys are grossly overpaid.

“Bodega in DUMBO carries Hagen Daaz and Ben and Jerry’s and sells them for $5 a pint. Van Leeuwen goes to that bodega and says to sell his pints at $8 each. Bodega dude figures hey, if I can sell this stuff for $8, let me see if I can get away with selling the Ben and Jerry’s for $5.50. ”

the main problem here is that you chose DUMBO as the location- everyone know bodega prices are way inflated there already. and please stop attempting to fill in the blanks for Rob, he needs to learn to think on his own. big boy all grows up now!
