Kens- The Mona Lisa is displayed behind bulletproof glass which is typically treated to be UV/ light resistant. The UV rays are the ones that damage surfaces. I have a huge copperplate textile engraving which I had framed with UV glass. The color has not changed in years.
BTW- the Mona Lisa is painted on a wood panel, not canvas. a bigger issue than the flashbulbs is the acid from the wood of the panel it is painted on.
The Pieta was also attacked by a lunatic and the Virgin’s face was damaged.
It’s not like getting fake food or something. You need a hamburger to be real. If it’s made out of advanced plastics but otherwise is indistinguishable in look and feel and smell from a real hamburger, you don’t get out of that hamburger what you need.
Artwork? If you believe it’s an original, you’re there. It can be completely fake and you still get that satisfaction you’re seeking.
You would never see that kind of flash picture taking at the Vatican library or Sistine Chapel. Same Japanese tourists, same cameras, some screaming desire to get all of this digitally recorded…….but those folks just don’t put up with it.
I went to the Cloisters a few weeks ago. I was leaning in to look closer at the Unicorn tapestries, and a siren went off. Well, some high screetching tone. Two guards came hustling over to see what I did. I just bent in too close to the tapestry (there is a sensor about a foot from the art works).

Every experience you have ever thought you had might be a lie. Does it matter?
“Almost all dinosaur skeletons in museums are somewhere between 40% and 100% copies of fossils.”
Sounds like Brooklyn heights residents.
“I’m agnostic. Is that consistent?”
Who am I to say? I don’t have any idea. 😉

Would that be the original with Pat Morita

THAT’s taking art security seriously…
