“Also, many US companies have significant earnings from overseas now and are growing more rapidly overseas. Think MCD and many others.â€
Yes, this is what I was thinking about, too. US stock market not beholden to state of US citizens. Strong stock market not necessarily unsustainable bull just because higher than US numbers.
So the question is: how do we make the “winners†care? Likely impossible.
wasder- Rates backed up a tad this week. We are around 5% on the 30yr today. Some opportunities to get 4.875% still for very low LTV deals, jumbos a little higher around 5.25%.
Treasury Yields are on the rise currently which is putting pressure on mortgage rates. It’s been very volatile for the past week or two. See my rant above. These are still very good rates but some consumers have been accustomed to being in the 4’s and are having a hard time when rates have moved higher. We had been improving since Christmas but this week wasn’t good for rates. Next week may be better, I personally think the market is setting up for a slight sell off which will bring rates back down into the 4’s. I could talk about this all day but I got to run.
“JB, a ton of the listed firms still rely heavily on health of consumers in US.â€
Ah, yes. Duh. Doesn’t matter if the firm can make stuff without the US worker if it means US worker no longer has money to buy it. Shedding US jobs might make a corp more lean, but it does so at the collective expense of those that would buy its products. Thanks!

CGar, days of when the Chinaman gets pushed around has long passed. Words dont scare me. I can be bribed though as it is genetically code in our DNA.

jb- exactly. A consumer society with no money to consume.
m4l, as Leo Amery, echoing Oliver Cromwell, said to Neville Chamberlain:
“You have sat here too long for any good you are doing. Depart, I say, and let us have done with you. In the name of God, go!”
