  1. “if you are born poor (no matter what color) – your chances of growing up and not being poor are pretty slim.”

Absolute poverty is an issue, relative poverty is unimportant. As long as people have enough to eat and a roof over their heads, the rest should be up to them.

“if pointing out these exceptions (from different generations) makes you feel better about your own situation”

Sorry, no guilt here. Other people being poor, or rich, has very little to do with my own situation.

  2. “What does that have to do with it? Lots of white people from working class backgrounds here as well when you go back a generation or two. ”

so you’re asking why poor black people are more susceptible to crime than other poor minorities/white people? nice can of worms to open there, brit!

i’d be willing to say, in the US today – if you are born poor (no matter what color) – your chances of growing up and not being poor are pretty slim. outliers? sure.

but if pointing out these exceptions (from different generations) makes you feel better about your own situation, that’s cool.

(sorry – had a really annoying meeting and venting at you guys. xoxoxo)

  3. Absolute living standards matter a lot more than the gap.
I think of the term endanger to refer to immediate threat to life or property. If major banks had failed and deposits weren’t insured I could maybe see your point.
Other than that it’s just an economic downturn. Unemployment is only high relative to US history, still lower than e.g. most of Europe in the 80’s and 90’s.
