DH, seattle aint cheap at all dude. portland is cheaper but aint cheap either. but first hurdle you need to clear first is the constant gloomy weather – ie you’ll fine yourself super giddy when sun comes out and that’s when you realized you’ve been a little depressed all that time prior waiting for sun to come out. if you’re going to row the dice, go with Seattle before portland – much better job prospects and better positioned for the future industry-wise too.
My neice just went to Dallas for a two month work assignment. Apparently, Texas is the new hotbed for young professionals. New York is just too expensive for many of them now.
From my recollection, the riverboat pilot system in Louisiana is a complete scam.
There are a series of private associations that control each section of the River.
They determine their own rules, select their own members, and set their own rates.
You have to be related to an existing pilot to get a job, and even then I have a feeling there are other prices to pay.
In a state that is 1/3 black (New Orleans is much higher), as of a few years ago there was one black pilot and no females.
I suspect that both Seattle and Portland are composed of more liberals than Vermont.
When I lieved in London I remember thinking after a long, gloomy stretch of weather, “Gee, there still is a sun!” People in Portland, OR say the same.
ishtar, I got lots of stink eye from Seattle locals for my constant jaywalking and were warned frequently that I’ll soon be ticketed for it.
