I mean except for YoYo Ma, who I believe is Chinese-American(born here) you rarely see any Chinese cross-overs in music….
however on occasion you will see Japanese and Korean….
What’s interesting is an interview I heard with an educator in Shanghai in discussing the Chinese approach to learning. He basically said they’re great at mastering concepts, but their method of learning leaves little room for creativity. Kinda falls in line with that “lacking soul” comment.

remember I worked in intl marketing for a global record company and the problem with their music exports are #1.obvious language issues and #2. the complete lack of soul or orginality…

gem, you are right about that. Yes, they can learn to play what’s been written, even the best of beethoven, etc. but can they actually create/write/compose? No. And the reason being the way they learned to play was always too rote.
I have heard a few Japanese jazz musicians. Technically they are great, but the can’t swing.
