  1. Any one can be Hispanic. Hispanic are spanish speaking people not from Spain. Spaniards are not Hispanic. A spanish speaking Chinese person from Cuba is Hispanic. If the he was completing the census, he could chose hispanic-non-white and Chinese.

  2. Um gem, blacks can’t be white, at least society doesn’t understand those who look white and aren’t passing, and hispanic, like Jewish, is not a race. It’s a catch all for Spanish speaking peoples of the New World, which certainly covers a multitude of cultures, races and regions. I’m sure lots of those under the umbrella “Hispanic” don’t consider themselves as all being in the same boat, just as lots of Caribbean people and Africans don’t like being lumped in with “Black” or “African-American”.

  3. Gem, my daughter is at Brooklyn Tech now with 5000 kids in grades 9-12. Somehow I think a larger percentage will graduate. Tech is the largest high school in the city but there are a few more with 4000+ students.

  4. M4l – ok but then asian peeps all just get lumped in together? that’s nto fair. I mean philipinos would classify themselves as what? asian or hispanic? I guess asian by geography but so many of them are spanish, right?

  5. G10, you are funny, not clueless. Or what is it?

While most white people seem to think that all Hispanics are dark skinned, in fact they are not. There are Hispanics that would be considered white, both here and in their own countries. Mrs D for example surprises the vast majority of folx white, black, and Hispanic around here cuz most people are too ignorant and racist to consider that one could actually be white yet come from Latin America. Imagine that? So Mrs D gets to overhear many conversations in Spanish (in which she is completely fluent) where the speakers fail to consider that she might actually speak it. Conversely, there are some folx from Latin America who will tell her she is not a ‘real’ Hispanic cuz she is light skinned.

So, having two ‘Hispanic’ boxes allows those who self-identify as white to do so, and also those who self-identify as Black to do so.

The subject of skin color is just as difficult in Hispanic countries as it is here among other groups more native to America.

  6. “-10, I surmise maybe hispanic includes spaniards who might qualify as white and dominican who might qualify as black, white-not hispanic excludes spaniards, and black-not hispanic excludes dominicans. pure guess on my part.”

Yes, yes, done every one of all of those combinations.
