  1. African blood is mixed into the Hispanic pot in more places than just the DR and PR, and a couple of other Caribbean islands. You’ve got a very large influx of African diaspora people in Central and South America, basically anywhere Spain needed labor. That includes Panama. There are also the Garifuna people of Guatamala, who can trace their African ancestors back to Mali, before they mixed with the Amerindians and Spanish. There were also black peoples in the western coast of Mexico. It’s actually fascinating, the mixtures of people in the world.

  2. For Census purposes Hispanic is not considered a race. I think the tracking of the Hispanic populations has to do with funding for ESL programs etc. I worked part-time as a census taker. When interviewing someone we as if they are Hispanic and if they are are they Mexican, Puerto Rica, etc. Then we ask is they are White, Black American Indian,Korean etc or some other race.

  3. Who is old enough to remember when whites in NYC used to call Puerto Ricans “Spanish People”? Those were the days when Puerto Ricans were the only Hispanics with a sizble population in NYC.
