  1. G10, complicated question and not necessarily. There are generations of people who came from the Old World to the New in search of a better life. Incredible as it seems, not all came to the US. Some went to other countries. Asshats!

So plenty of Hispanics can trace their heritage directly to Europe but have been in Latin America for generations. But if at some point their children come here, they identify to the broader culture as Hispanic, altho within their own circle they will identify nationally (Argentinian, etc).

See benson re Italians from Argentina in bensonhurst.

  2. A lot of the Columbian and Mexican guys that go to the bar I frequent on 46th street call the bartenders “ay mami” and they are all the same age.

Contextually it doesn’t always mean “daddy.”

  3. >[gasoline smell] … My wife restrained me from replying all with the type of message that I’m sure you can all imagine me writing. Probably better for me not to make enemies with 100% of the mothers of my kids’ friends.

Why not? And for the first time I actually agree with you!

  4. Rob – seriously WRONG – am telling you go on Urbanbaby.com and check out the message boards there filled with UES moms who obesess over being thin and what private school their kids get into…..
