Lechacal, I gave my kid an allowance in elementary school but it was kind of silly. We’d both forget and then have a fight about how much I owed her.
But starting in middle school, I gave her a more substantial amount (now $20/week) and she manages it pretty well, for snacks she buys between school and chorus or other activities, itunes, whatever, and she saved enough to buy holiday presents for a bunch of friends. She also puts money on her metrocard for weekends. It does help that she gets some babysitting/catsitting jobs plus a few cash gifts from the grandparents.
I have friends with kids in high school who give their kids an amount ($100? not sure) every month and the kid is responsible for virtually everything, clothing, entertainment, transportation, etc.
Is that why you want to move to the suburbs, so you can have a chicken coop in the back yard? Better check that zoning!

I never had an allowance, just lunch money. Then I had a paper route at 9 years. Do kids do that here?
Whoah whoah whoah. Chores you have to do because you have to do them. You don’t get paid for chores. You get dinner.
If you want to make money, you do work above and beyond chores. Cleaning up the house is not paid work.
rf- every race has a trash factor. Why single out just one?
We give our 9 year old son a $5 a week allowance that we then take away parts of for not doing chores, cleaning his room, etc…

If I weren’t in Kansas City I would have. I plan on making a few bux out of them on Friday’s snowstorm though. I was thinking about hiring them out as waiters at private parties.

My biggest peeve is parents that over indulge their children with useless crap.
Too bad your parents felt the same way and didn’t at least send you to school.

What, like extra tiny matchbox cars and teeny tiny little dolls? Does he watch cartoons on a miniature TV?
Mines was called an “allowance†but I had to do “chores†to earn it. Vacuumed floors and stairs (carpet runners) and dusted the tables.
