  1. another thought,
yes, it’s late and I’ve just gotten back from a long day, so I wanted to post this one as well:

Capitalism is inherently in line with evolutionary theory in that it is admittedly based on rewarding hard work and success.
This is most likely why it seems to work so effortlessly.

Marxism/Socialism works along theories at odds with natural selection.

    come to think of it,
marxism even seems to work against physics, in a
    probabilistic vs. deterministic sense.
But I’ll leave that for tomorrow.

  2. I think one of the more interesting and stifling mixes is Singapore. Singapore is the epitome of a Capitalistic society in the business sense only. Yet creativity and failure are simultaneously looked down on. Creativity is stunted because no one wants to be “too out there.” Unlike in America (and somewhat like Japan but not China), failure is the ultimate loss of face and isn’t something that you can easily rebound from. Anything outside of Episcopalian religion isn’t tolerated well despite Singapore being quite multi-ethnic. Personal freedom is very limited and anything as outlandish as homosexuality id persecuted.

  3. just posting stream of consciousness-style here,
we can all agree that innocents die,
hell, even in times of peace 40,000 Americans die on the road in any given year.

Understanding that people will die in any situation in which humans interact on a mass scale,
which system seems to be more logical:

-The one which seeks to limit man’s potential in during his nasty, brutish and short time here

    or

-The one which seeks to explore man’s potential to it’s fullest extent and reward that challenge?

  4. I’m baaaaaaaaak,

” I don’t believe that. In anthropological terms, capitalism is competition and socialism is cooperation. Plenty of societies evolved naturally into cooperative societies.Capitalism is far more aggressive.”

    bxgrl,
I don’t think you actually believe that, given your understanding of history, namely the fact that Stalin and Mao actually set up state sponsored mass murder on a scale unequaled in human history.

While the Soviet Union was busy gobbling up most of Eastern Europe and Mao was busy killing 35 million of his countrymen, the United States was busy spreading the idea of individual freedoms above all else. Yes, innocent people died in those

Therein lies the real flaw in all the arguments I’ve heard today from you Bxgrl, Biff, MM and Arkady.
While Communism seeks to spread the idea of a society working for the greater good at the expense of individual freedom,
Capitalism seeks to spread the idea of individual freedom above all else.
And make no mistake about it, there is no in between. nation’s that seek to take a more moderate course, soon find themselves sujugated, as British Prime Minister Chamberlain found out and the French as well.

    In this sense, Lechacal’s statement:
“Capitalism is the only natural alternative to primitivism and chaos”

is very true for only capitalism allows for the full unfurling of human potential while avoiding the spectre of chaos. At best Marxism leads towards a crushing mediocrity.
This is ironic, in that it also seeks to eradicate any notions of religion or a higher power that might, at the very least, give solace to those unfortunate enough to be subjugated to Marxism’s flawed premise.

  5. “Capitalism is the only natural alternative to primitivism and chaos. Destroy capitalism and you soon return to the other.”

I don’t believe that. In anthropological terms, capitalism is competition and socialism is cooperation. Plenty of societies evolved naturally into cooperative societies.Capitalism is far more aggressive. The problem with any political idea or philosophy is how well people adhere to its principles. Neither capitalism nor socialism as practiced today adhere to their purported ideals and BHS is right- most societies today are a combination of both. Even ours.
