  1. I used to work at the Brooklyn museum- everyone who says the collections are world calss are completely right. One of the best kept secrets of NYC. And most of it never gets shown. They seem to have lost their direction- but considering the blockbuster shows places like the Met can give, it’s understandable for them to think they should go the same route. But they have neither the money or the Manhattan location. they need serious curatorial help- and ways to point out how unique and special they are.

They had a major costume collection that rivalled the Met’s. They gave it away because the director in the 90’s didn’t think that costumes and textiles were art. Funny- it works at the Met.

  2. Most Christmas movies revolve around the same lefty themes, harkening all the way back to “It’s A Wonderful Life”….the unfortunate, downtrodden entitled people have nothing for Christmas and along comes a Republican in the guise of an angel or some caring figure to give them a reason to live.

  3. “Re: It’s a Wonderful Life, a bunch of socialist bullshit wrapped up in Jimmy Stewart’s face. Barf.”

Gotta disagree with you on that one, Lech. More about moral leadership.

If you want to see socialism wrapped up in warm and fuzzy, it’s John Ford. John Ford was a great film maker, but his economic ideas were mushy.

  4. Ok, re Brooklyn Museum, there are 8500 Artifacts, pieces of art and sculpture in their Egyptian, Classical and Near Eastern collection. This is really what distinguishes the Museum. And there is a pretty impressive Islamic Art collection too – there is a prohibition against the use of the figure in Islamic art, but the Iranians have a long rich tradition of painting and there is a lot of beautiful things in the collection and there is gorgeous Islamic ceramics, and calligraphy. Couldn’t the museum create some kind of interesting exhibition organized around an idea or theme using these objects?

I think that if they had something a little better than Rock photos, you could get someone to take the treck (not hard, it is easily accessible by 4,5, 2,3)

I’m not really familiar with the Scrooge story. Wasn’t he just more of a general whiner and xmas hater? I mean there was nothing heroic about him. It’s not like he risked life and limb stealing all of the xmas presents and climbed to the top of a mountain to push them off, right? So no, his story is not a tragedy. He was more like a senior citizen who lives on the UES and shuffles around and bitches and moans about everything but never gets off his ass to do anything about it. The Grinch was bold and powerful and daring and heroic.
