  1. There brokers who bring buyers to potential properties and make nice with buyers. They are still obligated, unless agreed to otherwise in writing, to represent the seller.

And yes, Donatella, there are brokers who are knowledgeable, ethical and helpful. You know one. I know one who might be, so there are at least two in Brooklyn. And if you want some help from a broker, those are the qualities you should be looking for.

Since I am actively looking, I can tell you the ethical level of brokers, which was bottom of the barrel to begin with, has fallen off a cliff. There is very little for sale now so they are pulling out all the stops. The situation is unworkable and laws need to be enforced.

  2. The broker for the very first place I looked at in Bed Stuy was a really nice guy. I wasn’t interested in the house but I continued to use him as my broker and he did a fair amount of legwork. After that I gave him my Manhattan condo to list despite the fact that he was with a rather obscure Brooklyn broker. He also recommended the lawyer that I used and seince then I’ve been out to dinner with both of them. great guys.

Unfortunately, he has left the business.
