  1. etson – A neighbor of mine has been commuting to Stamford for 2 years now. Don’t know how she keeps it up – has to leave her house by 6:15. Lucky for her she goes toBoston & DC w/ some frequency & can sleep late those days.

  2. Donatella, most of China’s population is still super poor, wealth distribution still pretty concentrated, social services & money pool not up to par, etc. every decision comes with tradeoffs. scarcity was indeed a massive issue that powered the decision back then. am sure they’ll continue to relax and/or remove it as the country does better.

  3. “Renting on York Ave is for “broke” people desparate to live in Manhattan.”

OK, I tolerate almost everything on the OT but *this* I take personally 😉

(very happy mostly-not-broke renter in a v.nice building on York for 7 years. Try communting to CT from Brooklyn…. )

  4. “Population limitation like that comes from an attitude of scarcity. Did you all know that the yield on an acre of corn in 1950 was 30 bushels and now in Ohio it is averaging 185, due to technological advancements in seed technology. ”

mmmmm – more high fructose corn syrup for everybody!!

  5. Re China: Or maybe I got that wrong, that there are penalties and that people can deal with those penalties, whether they be high taxes, fines, etc. Maybe I shouldn’t say because I don’t know how it is administered. But I find the population control thing chilling.

There are also really some wacky things that China is going to have to deal with– not only the unnatural boy/girl ratio but the typical demographic problems of aging societies without enough population below them to care for/produce for them.
