  1. And you know what’s extra funny about the maple syrup thing? Making maple syrup releases a HUGE amount of carbon into the atmosphere.

It takes maybe 40 gallons of sap to make a single gallon of maple syrup. That means you have to boil off 39 gallons.

And a lot of these things are little mom and pop operations with super inefficient wood fired boilers.

One of our neighbors in VT taps our maples, and then we give him hardwood slabs from the sawmill, and then he gives us a bunch of maple syrup in exchange for all of that. You should see how much wood he burns. But his syrup is organic of course. You know why? BECAUSE IT COMES FROM A FUCKING TREE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE WOODS.

  2. I make no qualms about my carbon footprint. I don’t buy organic unless it’s economically the right choice. I’ve only found that to be true with salad greens which last longer than the fresh bunch of red lettuce that I like. I suspect it’s the packaging and type of greens more so than whether it was raised with or without fertilizers. In fact the plastic package used negates the whole idea of it being organic.

  3. jackal, why are you so grumpy these days??? Ordinarily, you’re super mean but still upbeat.

And thumbs up on the tree! In case I haven’t posted this every day since TGiving, I love Christmas!!

  4. Organic maple syrup. You know what, that’s fine. Be an idiot and think such a thing exists. But the problem with those uppity assholes that they walk around judging other people who don’t make the same ridiculous greentard choices they make. I don’t so much have a problem with stupid people who know they’re stupid. I have a problem with stupid people who think they’re smart (even though they’re just blindly doing what their college professors / the NY Times / the latest Micheal Moore documentary tells them to do).

  5. Working from Philly today & tomorrow. have to do an “introduction” to the membership committee of the Union League Tuesday night of someone I’m sponsoring as a member and then back to NYC Wed AM

  6. The renminbi had a strong move up last night (CNY). We are buying ZNH ahead of Hu Jintao’s visit in january because we think China will let the currency rise. ZNH (China Southern Airlines) is the biggest beneficiary of a strong renminbi because it has a lot of USD debt.

It moved up 66% in Sept-Oct when they let the currency rise.

  7. Biff, I’ve told the Mrs that I’m not lying to the kids if they ask me about santa claus or the easter bunny or the holy trinity or anything like that, but I’ve agreed for the time being to do everything I can to just not answer the question.
