    In terms of production: this fellow recounted the glory days of IBM from decades ago. He said that at that time, IBM was so hard-up for specialized labor that they took their cafeteria workers and trained them to be testers. He believes that we may be going back to those days (wrt Supercomputers), for the reasons discussed above. His point was that if we play our cards right as a country, this field could be a good source of jobs for people at all levels.

  2. M4L- I like AMD chips but the GPU’s are different than cpu’s- used their chips for years but I have to agree with benson on this. It’s almost like the old apple/pc comparison- apple was visual, pc was math/text based. They did different things well.

  3. wow- that was fascinating, benson. I mean that- and very interesting what he said about centralizing the production of a supercomputer. What do you think this means in terms of the logistics of production in general? I may be reading it wrong but I got the feeling in the future it will come down to present day ideas on the most efficient (or cheapest) strategies for manufacturing, versus the “old-fashioned” way. I imagine with supercomputers, not having total control over the manufacturing process will be a huge problem. And will it mean manufacturing will rethink it’s approach completely?

    I’m surprised the Chinese used an NVidia chip! Whyever did they do that?

  4. M4L;

    GPU’s ARE GPU’s. They are specialized processors built for a specific purpose: graphics! To postulate that they will replace CPU’s is plain ridiculous. You are comparing apples and oranges. It’s like comparing the energy efficiency of a wine cooler with a big refrigerator. Yes, the wine cooler will consume less energy: it’s only built for a single function.

  5. Benson, GPU’s about to kick CPU ass. if you go follow the early technical reviews of AMD’s Fusion line of GPU’s, you’ll see they’ve been kick intel CPU ass big time. faster and ton more energy efficient. reason why I’ve been telling denton, dibs to eye AMD. AMD’s GPU’s is tons better than Nvidia’s.
