Actually doesn’t Northern Ireland have some form of home rule or devolution a-la-Scotland now? Wasn’t there a change along these lines in the past decade? Is there any meaningful non-Irish military or police presence there any more?
I could give a rats ass what goes on in Ireland. I don’t really understand why American Jews get so wound up in what’s going on in Israel. Do Italian Americans really care what’s gone on in Italy???
There’s this book out there that I someday want to buy, a list of all 3,500 or so people who were killed in the troubles and how they died.

Gem – A great number of English would love to walk away from Northern Ireland and tow the entire damn island further out into the Atlantic somewhere.
But then they would leave a protestant minority that, if history is any guide, would be treated brutally by the Catholic majority.
So they’re stuck with a sense of moral obligation to stay and protect.
And it’s not even the English they are protecting. At this point the protestants are just as Irish as the Catholics are, although the Irish have a bad habit of living so far in the past they would disagree with that.
So the English are stuck protecting one group of Irish against another. A horrible job to get stuck with.

It’s primarily coming from the Canadian who has an inferiority complex amongst us Americans. An Australian company wants to inject $42B into Canada and the Prime Minister say “Non.” I think that’s pretty stupid if you ask me.
