“There is a good bit about Ireland, including more or less verbatim what I said above. I’m a shameless copycat.â€
Shame on you, Jackal. I expect nothing less than original research for all of your OT posts. 🙂
Also – how did you feel about people wearing guns to political rallies over the summer? To you was this just American citizens showing their government that they have the right to take it back by force if it no longer serves them? What about the fact that it’s illegal to violently overthrow the government? Can you use the 2nd amendment as a defense? Just curious about your thoughts on this stuff.
Dave- the establishment of the state of Israel hard on the heels of the Holocaust made it a very personal thing for American Jews. I imagine a majority of us lost family and/or had family involved in establishing the state. That said, there comes a point where blind adherence to Israeli policies no longer makes sense or offers any strategic advantage to the US without serious changes and creating peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Unlike Ireland and the Troubles, Israel is still relatively new- a great deal of emotion and pain was invested in it by my parent’s generation and those following. Today many young Jews no longer feel that attachment. It’s just a natural evolution, I guess.
by cmu,
“I stand by my statement: gun ownership should be as in England: strict control, needs a licence given rarely and for need, must be locked in the house etc.”
…uhh cmu,
why do you think England is full of aliens and
crop circles?
aliens know the guns are locked up!
The poor English living in the country are all
cowering in their homes at night in fear
of the “devil mower”.
Here in the USA, wheat farmers sleep soundly
with a copy of the 2nd amendment on the night stand.
While I have never been to Northern Ireland, I was fortunate to see quite a few cities while I was there, including Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford, Kilkenny, Arklow, Cashel, Dublin, Dingle, Kenmare, Killarney, Wicklow, etc. This was mostly done via a cross country and very winding drive back to Dublin. The scenery is stunning and the people are unbelievably hospitable. I particularly loved seeing pubs that would have a group of patrons whose ages spanned from late teens to late ’80s – all singing boisterously along to lone guitar player singing songs such as The Fields of Athenry. Quite unforgettable.
dona:yesterday’s discussion on guns was pretty interesting actually…
I read most of it. Intersting but as usual missed the point. While it might be interesting to suggest that the sainted FF’s would consider an Uzi the equivalent of a musket (times do change,) and that the Swiss, bless their righteous hearts, make everyone have a weapon chez eux, it’s irrelevant. The FF’s statements should not govern and control our modern life; the Swiss have had a long history of non-involvment surrounded by belligerent neighbors…their requirement is to make it difficult for outsiders to take over, not the gummint.
Read my previous post on why the fear of armed government is totally off-base. I stand by my statement: gun ownership should be as in England: strict control, needs a licence given rarely and for need, must be locked in the house etc.
benson- I stand by my comments and you repeat the same things over and over. You have no ability to look at your position and understand what makes it so two-faced. You’re so caught up in your own rigid belief system that you can’t even tolerate anyone disagreeing with you.
And you weer the one who made a point of including diversity and pro-choice as part of the liberal stance. Implying that conservatives are against diversity and are anti-choice (a position that threatens womens rights.) Frankly, I think believing in both those things puts me far closer to a constitutional position than you.
Lech- it would seem my simply breathing is a provocation to them but I don’t intentionally bait them. I respond to their baiting though- a very different thing.
