  1. “Let’s say this goes on for another 1000 years. Then we have hundreds of millions of books, billions and billions of pages of newspaper articles, magazines, and God forbid blog posts. An exponential explosion of information transmission, almost all of it utterly useless.

This is why SNDK is a buy.

  2. Ish – Phaedra is just ridiculous – did you SEE that baby shower? oh my good god!

oh god it’s funny b/c I perceive it as like she hates her husband’s “white side” or is embarrassed by it or something – but ur probably right!

  3. Just think about the explosion in recorded information, most of it totally useless. How many “authors” are there in Park Slope alone squeezing out little turds of books and magazine and newspaper artiles and blog posts? How many vampire books and boddice rippers get written? There’s nothing really new or interesting in almost all of them, it’s just regurgitating ideas of one kind or another, telling the same story over and over again with different names.

It’s not like farming or driving a taxi or being a doctor. These people aren’t really meeting a current human need. They’re creating information that can go on forever. It’s a pretty presumptuous thing to do.

Let’s say this goes on for another 1000 years. Then we have hundreds of millions of books, billions and billions of pages of newspaper articles, magazines, and God forbid blog posts. An exponential explosion of information transmission, almost all of it utterly useless.

It used to be that all useful ideas died in the brains of those who thought them up.

Now too many useless ideas outlive their authors.

Maybe when a writer dies there should be a panel to decide whether his work should die with him.

  4. Someone should start a production company that specializes in producing post-election “You’re gonna regret it, America” ads. And then PACs can run them for a month or so after the election.

Stuff like, “Some Americans let a fat cat corporate-type get elected to our hallowed office of Senator. Now all Americans will have to pay the price for the actions of some. Look at that idiot. Can’t even buy a jacket that fits around the shoulders.”

How cool would that be? A totally new chapter in political campaigning!

  5. “communicated where the smokin’
    cavegirls were?”

probably the same way we do it in loud bars today: drawing in the air a rough outline of the figure 8 curves using the hands and then a stabby pointing of the finger in the direction of the beauty of interest.

  6. Dibs – haaaa, of course I know Ricky is Gay – he’s just written a book about coming out and he’s on Oprah now – and I just think he sounds really articulate about his experience – that’s all!

  7. Oy. Not gonna weigh in on political argument, today. We’ll see about tomorrow. I may just need to rant, time permitting.

Benson — one thought on your Clinton theory. I think it is harder to primary a sitting prez of your own party if you are a key player in the administration. Much harder to position yourself as an alternative (and I really don’t think she’d be looking at independent run). I also think she would piss off lots of folks she would need to win. I v Ted K. was in a much different posture with respect to Jimmy C. So I doubt your speculation on this. But speculation is fun.

Bill C. was supposed to be a political goner after 1994 republican rout, so we’ll see what the next two years hol Bill C. tacked right where necessary but he also gave house GOP enough rope to hang itself and he was skillful at picking the points where he dug in his heels. Reagan ran a much more skillful mid-term campaign (remember “stay the course” in 1982) and still lost seats.

I’m not offering predictions or looking to debate. I just think the situation will be very dynamic and fluid the next two years. We’ll be living the old Chinese curse “may you live in interesting times.”
