“cobble, easy answer. china gov sponsors heavily on such things – ie something for them to boast in an area they care to boast (ie high tech). US gov been cutting spending left and right (ie even NASA stuff slashed a lot). Plus most hardcore engineers are not in this country so no surprising we aint in the lead on this stuff”

Sorry, completely false. The US government is investing heavily in the area of supercomputers, through DARPA. Last year Darpa awarded both IBM and Cray $250 million dollars each to develop next generation supercomputers.
Moreover, these supercomputers ARE being developed in the US. Cray’s engineering is in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin while IBM’s is in Pughkeepsie, NY.
If you want to see this area in action, go to the Supercomputing Show in New Orleans in a couple of weeks. I will be there. The Chinese are a distant third in this field.
After the US, the French are #2.
What’s that ad that’s currently running on TV with both the young girl and the young guy who take off their glasses and let their hair down and then the guy jumps on the girl????
Super-Computing is the field I work in. In fact, I was just invited to give a presentation on the role of fiber optics in the development of supercomputers.
Fear not. Supercomputing is a field totally dominated by the US, IBM and Cray in particular.
This news is just the Chinese trying to show they have the biggst d__K. Go to this site (www.top500.org) and look who actually has the most supercomputers.
Also, I can tell you that both IBM and Cray are in the process of developing a new generation, financed by DARPA.
“OK techies, what is the practical point in having the fastest? That is, what can the fastest do that #2 can’t?”
Etson, size matters. Come on now.

James macArthur who played the original Danno in Hawaii Five-O died.
I’ve had an interest in numerous Chinese servers.
I was waiting for your response, benson.
I hear the Chinese are not interested in Mr. B’s new server.

Genuine question. I’m not very computer literate.
