Bombing of Dresden was pretty bad, too.
I tend to think Nagasaki was more directed at Russia. Why did we wait only 3 days after Hiroshima to do it again. We wanted Japan’s surrender before USSR could get in the act. After Hiroshima, Japan wasn’t set to do any damage to us in the next week or so. Why not let it sink in a little?
Two of my favorite books are Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes and Farewell to Manzanar. I think they are required readings for middle school students in Cali.

The bomb couldn’t be used in Europe because there were a lot of allied people at risk whereas there were few in Japan.
It was however effective at stopping the war whereas nothing else had been.
