  1. “The French and other catholic peoples revolt and get violent. The English and other protestants tend instead to reform.”

Except, of course, when they try to blow up parliament. Anyone have plans for Guy Fawkes day next month? Not to mention when they go on military campaigns burning the roofs off of catholic churches.

Yes, US has Christian roots. Puritans/Congregationalists with religious practices informed substantially by Dutch church and at odds with Anglican Church, Quakers, Unitarians, Swedenborgs, Baptists, not to mention Anglicans themselves. It is precisely because of the our Christian roots that we have an establishment clause and protect religious freedom and diversity. That clause entered our bill of rights partly due to a unitarian/baptist alliance. Our Christian founders (to the extent Unitarians and various forms of deists can be said to be Christian) determined that the way to protect this diversity and encourage religious freedom is to establish the US as emphatically not a Chtristian nation, as a legtal matter.

  2. D-Cat, I know what you are talking about. Those Faux-Fred Flintstone facades. It is a nasty job, but yes you can fix that. Keep an open mind. I think you can find bargains that way; come here for contractors to do estimates before putting in a bid. I also think you can get good prices in Clinton Hill still.
