  1. jackal — Morgan, maybe. Doesn’t sound so much like Joe Kennedy. But it did sound like mythmaking. Probably some mid-level Morgan guy said it and it made the rounds until it was kind of a catchphrase, so everyone heard it from someone big who wasn’t the source.

So, here’s a complaint about the Burns doc. Other than Tweed himself, we’ve hear nothing about NYC government and politics. A few pics of Mayor Jimmy Walker (no, not that Jimmy Walker, keep your dynomite to yourselves) cutting ribbons with Al Smith, but that’s about it. No Plunkett of Tammany Hall, no fusion v. machine battles, no Robert Moses projects, nothing. I’m sure we’ll get a big story arc about LaGuardia. Of course, I’ve nodded off a bit, so I may have missed something.

CGar — If you haven’t read The Power Broker, it’s worth reading. Also, Plunkett of Tammany Hall (“I seen my opportunities and I took’em” “honest graft” etc.).

  2. Dave- I had the best of both worlds- a great school for education and lots of fun trips to Plattsburgh. Binghamton wasn’t known for parties but boy, Did we ever!

Arkady- when was your brother there? I took a couple of philosophy courses- take about pain- maybe he was one of my profs?

Lots of very well known people came out of Binghamton- Molly Peacock, the poet; Camille Paglia, Art Speigelman (who taught me to paint murals), Arnie Zane/Bill Jones, I think Gregory Benford and many more.

  3. You people are wayyyy too deep sometimes. Sometimes you need just lie back on the couch, watch something, and let yourself enjoy it without thinking about it so much.

And, etson, a man who hates movies has no standing in my view to opine on any kind of film. 😉

  4. Dibs – ummmmm maybe $2200 a month? Idk really
I think what I was saying is that i would work at a part time job and collect my SS and try not to touch my 401K until I needed it
eeks – I don’t know what the eff I will be doing – haaaaa

  5. Re retirement and expectations…….just get out a piece of paper and figure out what are your basic needs re housing, home maintenance (it doesn’t get cheaper) food, utilities, newspapers, eating out once in a while, your wine supply, your trips to see friends or vacation etc. Then figure out what your social security is and look at how much money you have in your 401K/other and figure out how you are going to preserve this money and make it last till you are 90+ years old.

I can tell that most people haven’t done this. This is not a woo woo commercial, it is a sobering exercise. And the reality is that most people are going to have to continue to work much longer than they ever thought. Unless you have actively planned this out and/or have an old fashioned pension and there aren’t that many of those around (this is the reason people HATE civil service, pure envy) even then you need to do the same.

I am not talking about the Cialis/Ameriprise commercial (same thing).

  6. OK that’s it I have to have to have to shut off the OT for the rest of the day. I’ve had some extra time b/c one of my deals died and I need to use the time more productively than this before my next deal hits (which will happen at any time with no notice). I’ve decided to write an article on the use of mathematical formulas in everyday corporate lawyering. I know, a dismal subject for almost everyone, but interesting to a few nerds out there.
