I also disagree with most of my liberal friends about he second amendment… I used to buy the party line but what happened was a while ago I started spending some time in Houston and almost by accident learned how to shoot. And I found I was very good at it right from the start, probably since the physical skills needed to shoot well are the same ones used in photography. Then I got interested in pursuing the sport here and got pretty disgusted when I found out how many hoops I had to jump thru, so I started looking into the whole matter.
It’s pretty clear, if you study the historical record,(The Federalist Papers, for example) that the Founding Fathers wanted the people to be armed as a weight against an oppressive government. Also some interesting wording in the Bill of Rights itself that indicates ‘people’ as individuals and not a militia aka National Guard.
That doesn’t mean I am against some regulation of gun possession but an outright ban would clearly be unconstitutional. Recent Supreme Court decision re handgun onwership in Washington DC agrees. Bloomberg has ordered a study of NYC gun permits to make sure there is no surprise if there is another ruling.
Some liberal anti-gun scholars (not all) who have done the research agree with my take and feel the answer is to repeal the amendment. That to me is at least intellectually honest.
And the second has not a damn thing to do with hunting.
