Yeah, dh, I bet others were hoping he’d stop marking his territory and pissing on them!!!!

Oh was it JACKAL who was using my stoop??????

  3. Jessi, that’s more or less the mission of the group I belong to, the Crown Heights North Association. They started as a grassroots neighborhood group of neighbors (before I moved there) to get CHN landmarked, based on a 1976 study the LPC did, but then shelved. We’ve grown to be all about landmarking still, but also about community empowerment, and cultural preservation and appreciation, as well as architectural preservation. A beautiful neighborhood isn’t worth much if it isn’t safe, economically sound, and working. We’ve won a few awards, and are well respected in the preservation community, our next step is getting big time grants to further our goals. And there’s not all that much money out there for that purpose, but we’re trying.

  4. denton- as an artist and graphic designer I have to say don’t diss my field. I went into it because I always wanted to be an artist but like donatella my family thought art was “poofery” and I since I also loved science and such, went into anthropology. Art was always my passion, but it took me years to realize this is what I want to do and will do.

We need more and better communication and to me, art does that. good art that is. And I have no problem with saying that art is a necessity. I could go into the whole market/business thing but i say art is a necessity because I believe the humanities are necessary for us to be human. (I can hear the laughing now). Artists were once considered important contributors to society. Now we are just dissed as trust fund babies ( never had one) and less than important. Of course, society hasn’t fared well either. SO it goes hand in hand.

The British still have a wonderful apprenticeship system. I love reading about craftsmen who have a lineage they can trace back for hundreds of years, citing how one master apprenticed with another down the line. But we don’t put a real premium on craftsmanship these days. People who work with their hands don’t get the same “respect” a successful financier does. I think that’s really sad.
