Legion, who said anything about anything you just wrote? Not me. What does Cuba have to do with anything? You always have to rachet it up to absurdity.
What I did say, and let me repeat, is that the primary function of government is NOT to be a chamber of commerce. “A government of the people, by the people, and for the people”. Not a govenment of business, by business, and for business.
A gov’t for the people does not mean a nanny state, or a welfare state, or a socialist state. I did not say that, ANYWHERE or at any time. The gov’t has a social contract with it’s citizenry to aid in helping those who can’t help themselves. You want to argue about where we’ve gone off the tracks there, by all means let’s go to it. Yes, we have wasted tons of money over the years in doing this. But we don’t throw out the baby with the bath water. Good governance still helps those who need it. It also polices itself and works as efficiently and honestly as possible. That part of it needs constant work, no doubt about it.
What are you saying about our “national drive?” WHA? The majority of people in this country want to work, to invent, to create, innovate, and get ahead. Gov’t doing its job right doesn’t stop that, and letting business do whatever it wants doesn’t encourage that. Business does what’s good for business. If it happens to coincide with the interests of the people that’s great for them, but if it doesn’t, they have no qualms or hesitation doing what works for them. See off-shore jobs as a prime example.
I think what’s so telling is that most of us liberals here believe that business CAN and of course does help the economy grow and we need it, but all the conservatives here on the OT can’t admit why we need Gov’t workers and services…
Oh and the offshore jobs comment is hilarious. I dunno whenever I call my citibank card or mortgage # for help I always am speaking to someone with a distinct Indian or Philipino accent it’s never EVER someone with an american accent. SO it’s safe to assume I am in fact calling those countries whereas 8-10 years ago it was always an American answering the line to help me

I am researching a trip to Cuba over Thanksgiving. But getting there looks so expensive — my best deal, 300 dollars to Toronto, 600 Canadian Airlines to Havana.
When I do the Nassau thing, I get charged for the holiday premium. Also, I am a little nervous getting a little puddle jumper to Havana from Nassau. Canadian Airlines I feel a little better about. The hotels, nice big Chains like Melia (5 star) 150 a night.
I’m glad you saw the ridiculousness of your statement, cmu.
If you really think that everyone in the private sector is “screwing the peons” then maybe, reverting to a discussion that i wasn’t part of a few weeks ago, this country and its capitalist system is not for you.
that sucks MM about the business loan thing. funny how youre established and have a vast work experience and cant get a loan, yet look how easy it is for some twatwaffle fresh off the boat from iowa to get a loan to open up stupid lunch trucks and chocolate factories :-/

parksloper,
well, we’ll have to start by cutting our population by 90% and increasing our suicide rate by 90% cause that’s what’s going on over there.

The response to recessions and high government deficits in Sweden was to cut spending. Norway = oil driven economy. Not sure about Denmark.
