  1. rob- please stop talking. really. for your own good.

“Am I a dork for wanting to go to that Stewart/Colbert rally in DC?” Hell no! In fact you just went up 10 points in my estimation 😉

    Ishtar- seriously- go!

  2. “I feel we should give reparations to Black Americans though and possibly Japanese Americans”

What an appalling idea. You propose to do what – take away MY money (someone who had nothing whatsoever to do with slavery) and give it to some kid who’s alive today (and has nothing whatsoever to do with slavery)????

Punish the current generation for the mistakes of prior generations????

If there is injustice TODAY, then make things just TODAY.

  3. JEssi – really, the Belgians? I thought the Brits just b/c they had stomped into so many major lands and took over

Rob – yeah, you gotta point – I too had nothing to do with slavery, but then again like MM suggested maybe if we ALL had more power over what our tax dollars pay for then people could opt in to support different causes. Either way it will never happen and too messy to prove

  4. “It’ a long, sad story and frankly whatever advantages or perks Native Americans get, they deserve.”

    BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT BULLSHIT

Whatever happened to your great great great grandfather is just too bad. You deserve exactly squat as compensation for the injusices committed by dead people on dead people.

Once a generation or two goes by, it’s done. Move on. Somebody won, somebody lost. Fight today’s fight, don’t bitch and moan about the fight your granddaddy lost. It’s sniveling and unproductive.

Since we’re on this topic, can the US please return all the national treasures they (along with Germany, UK,…, Japan) took when they invaded and occupied China.

You lost them yourselves with the mass exodus to taiwan. Ever been to the National Museum there!!!!!!!

Also read that the Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution destroyed a lot of stuff to make some kind of point about obliterating the past. (In Life and Death in Shanghai Nien Cheng describes a bunch of young kids in the Red Guard who came into her house and smashed one by one priceless Song dynasty ceramics). You can’t get anything out of there now, though.

  6. The French were more prolific than the Brits. They seemed to have had a better reputation in how they treated their “subjects.”

Colonialism is not always bad. Even under the Italians Ethiopians never starved.
