Lech, both deal with problems from the past. The significant difference is that reperations are a one time fix. Affirmative action means a group gets favored treatment forever. Or at least until another group gets the spotlight.
Personally, I think “race” is a totally man made cultural phenomenon. There is a huge scale of skin color, facial features, shoe size, whatever.
I’m Jewish, Choctaw, and Black. All of this “mixing” within the past three generations.
We believe one of my grandmother’s fathers is from Barbados. My grandmother said he talked with an accent uncommon to any part of the US. We tried to track down his records and came across the deed to his land, which was considered prime land and purchased just after slavery ended. One of my professors in undergrad, from Trinidad and an expert in the migration of blacks throughout the diaspora, looked at everything and told us he was likely Bajan and in the British Navy in some capacity and ended up in the states. He said it was pretty common at the time. He gave me the info to look up naval records, but I’ve been too lazy to do it.
Reparations are about paying for the sins of the dead.
—-more seriously – aren’t most about returning property that was taken illegally/or by force. As nazis took/stole from jewish families in europe both real estate and treasues. Or colonialists taking historical artifacts back to museums from 3rd world.
If your talking about some payoff just because treated unfairly, I would agree doesn’t make much sense unless clearly directed to addressing speficic problem….but if
I had deeds to prove my family owned a farm in south carolina and was driven out with blessing of local goverment or because some corporation desired the land – seems legitimate claim.
Dave, I said rip off the filter…not denigrate folks and throw out nasty statements about female body parts! Sorry, but with the What, that was all we got. He occasionally had a good point/argument, but the pure, unadulterated vitriol he spewed made most of it unreadable/not worth reading.
Snaps I agree!
ever since Benson went crazy-town on me b/c of 1 statement I made about Irish and Italian americans I was like you know what, Ima say whatever I think and if someone can counter-point me than am all ears – am never afraid to listen to others.
I just think it’s tough for many of us on this board b/c many of us don’t really know each other so it’s hard to see where that person may be really coming from.

I miss SDFL – I know you do too Dave!
Don Mattingly replaces Joe torre at the Dodgers!!!!
Depends on where you grew up, rob. I had John, Jean & Judy and their pets Spot & Puff. There were no black friends in that book…nor Asians or latinos.
