  1. My father’s mother’s mother’s father’s last name was Prince. He was a homeopathic “doctor” in Brooklyn in the mid 1800s. Prince St in Brooklyn is named after that branch of the family.

    Another branch gave the plot of land that Trinity Church sits on to the church. They were original Dutch settlers.

    But not a single one of my ancestors was rich. I come from a long proud line of poor rock-picking yankee farmers (and the occasional homeopathic doctor I guess). Most of you probably know my last name and can surmise that my English ancestors weren’t really worth a damn either.

  2. m4l…I’m trying not to characterize them like that. But it seems astonishing to me that many of my neighbors can’t face up to the fact that we dangerously under-capitalized.

    A lot of them think that we should just muddle along with a 4 or 5 percent increase and do assessments in case of big emergency projects.

    When I pointed out to one member that this was unwise, since it’s harder for people to come up with a sudden 1K rather than pay an extra 30 or 50 bucks a month, he said to me:

    “Well, you should just have a fund for this kind of emergency expense. Why don’t you put away $50 a month towards potential assessments.”

    Um…that’s what a maintenance increase is for.

  3. Ha! Nice, Lech!

    Ishtar, Pass the Dutchie is the ONLY reggae song I really and truly like. Reminds me of an uncle of mine. He used to play it nonstop when I was little. Miss him 🙁

  4. Snaps – ok I get your point. If he ever comes back, I will refrain from any comments on Italians. ( I remember the WICKED fight that THL had with him that one time – do you???)
    and yes you are right about our respective experiences with other cultures.

  5. Hello all;

    Someone told me that my name is being thrown around in here.

    Snappy: say what you will. At least I know where I stand, and I don’t have trouble with the political correctness that is rife on this board.

    Gem: you still don’t get it, do you? The issue was not one of sensitivity. The issue was that you tried to discount my arguments by invoking my ethnicity, and its supposed shortcomings. When you have the balls to do that with some of the favored groups around here, I’ll believe your statement up above. Until then, I remain in my statement that you knew exactly what you were trying to do in that dialogue.

    Scanning the OT today, I see that it is still the land of political correctness, and I am happy to be off it.

  6. “they got their plot in the lottery and walked to it from Northampton with all of their possessions in a big cast iron pot they carried on a pole between them.”

    This made me think of Pass the Dutchie. LOL
