I think letting groups self-identify is a bunch of politically correct BS when it’s taken too far. The term african american is total hooey and I refuse to use it. People are welcome to use it to identify themselves if they feel it does something for them, and assuming they are factually correct when they say it.
MM, interestingly, chicken uses “Oriental” to describe himself. And I once re-posted something from one of his emails (with his permission of course), and dave and Noki jumped on me (nh/nh) for it until I explained and then chicken came in and explained.
dave, what was it chicken said? In his experience, both in Asia and in London, “Oriental” tends to describe people from China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam, e.g., and “Asian” tends to describe people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, e.g.?
speaking about ethnicities…surprised we have not heard from Benson re: Italian-american descrimination at CUNY—article in today NYTimes (I guess the story wasn’t picked up in the NYPost). Apparently Italian was included as one of the affirmitive action classes years ago at CUNY and some believe they are under-represented and discrimated against in faculty position.
MM – agree with your position about letting the group self identify. To your point, one thing I’ve heard about “Native Americans†is that they don’t particularly like or use that term and prefer to be identified by tribe. Should ask Dave though, he’s had a lot of experience with most of them – just not the Canarsie. I like that you believe in aliens, I do, too.

We did read the limericks but please email me mine- I want to carve it in stone 😉
“To aliens, we’re probably just humans. Or maybe food.”
Anyone remember that old Twilight Zone show- To Serve Man?
“I just don’t bother with “the other white meat.””
You’re kosher now, DIBS?
CGar, “Oriental” is used to describe objects, such as rugs, vases, etc. “Asian” is used to describe people. Nothing to do with country of origin.
Perhpas we should use Japanese terms because for races we don’t know what they mean. What do the Japanese call white peeps?
“Orientals”, for example.”

I’ve started thinking of myself as a ‘person of no color’.
