  1. Kens, that makes sense, and you’re lucky — and smart. I’d be in a much more difficult position if I were laid off, which I worry about every once in awhile when I spend too much of the day on the Internet instead of being productive … or when I spend too much money on ultimately frivolous material goods (food, wine, clothes, electronics) or experiences (travel, eating out). I also have a family, and kids to educate, so you’re right that that makes a huge difference.

  2. Is it “Quran” or “Koran?”

It’s actually “القرآن الكري” so it may not be so important how we transliterate it into English, except that the former looks more exotic and therefore more politically correct these days.

  3. Park Sloper, some people just live below their means. If you play your cards right, you really can survive for a while. I am not trying to brag or anything but if I was layed off tomorrow, with unemployement and savings, I can pretty much live fairly comfortably for a bit over 2 years. I wont have enough to go on vacations or go out to eat as much as I do now but I’ll have enough to live. And trust me, I probably make quiet a bit less than about 80% of posters on the OT. I think being unemployed will be more of a self-esteem thing for me than financial. I will always be able to pick up work here and there and thank god I don’t have little kids to feed or worry about. If I had a family, it’d be much more difficult.

  4. “After a certain point of only eating, drinking and sex; you do actually get tired of it and need more!!!!”

True. Still, the point is to get there. AFTERWARD you can review your options.

  5. “Sounds good for maybe a week or two (apart from the espresso and cigarettes). Would get boring after that.”

maybe – some people need to go into work and hold down a chair everyday for a feeling of self worth, even if they don’t have to (financially)

not me – give me a table, some grappa, pack of cigarettes and a few homies and I’m straight.

I think people get part time jobs. I am lucky b/c I still have cash left over from the sale of my house – but I am in a minority and I reallllly don’t want to have to spend that cash on bills and mortgage but I don;t have a choice – severance is gone byt the end of this month!

  7. “And what if you are from here? And ALWAYS worked here? And your family is here? And your friends are here? Where am I supposed to go, for chrisakes?”

I’m not saying it’s fair, I’m saying that’s the way it is. I’ve been unemployed more than once, and as a media professional have also been profoundly impacted by the economy and the recent changes in technology and our society. So I certainly understand and appreciate your frustration, CH.

But I think ishtar is right – there is a big gap between the jobs and opportunities available now and what many of us are trained to do. It’s not fair, but it’s reality, and we will each have to figure our for ourselves how we will deal with it. Unemployed people do want to work, but the free market owes a job to no one.
