  1. “I get annoyed when people take religious holidays off and it’s treated as sacrosanct no matter what is happening. I’ve had to work on every Christian holiday. Not that I’m a practicing Christian, but there are lots of non-practicing jews who suddenly find religion when it comes to days off. And the no working Saturday thing is even more annoying. I really wish I could just bag out of every Sunday.”

hmmm, well I think it’s more the pull of family. My friend is jewish and she is SWAMPED at work right now and totally stressed to have to take off the next 2 days. But she has to b/c her family expects her to come home and be with them during the holidays.
I would never ever work on Christmas no matter what was happening at work – I don’t save lives so nothing is that important to work through Christmas!

  2. donatella-if the sushi chef was Korean, he might not have looked so shocked.

Did I ever tell you about my trip to the dog restaurant in Guangdong province?

I was with a bunch of Hong Kong pals and we were touring the countryside. We stopped for lunch at a big outdoor restaurant specializing in local dishes. It was a cheery place with picnic tables, with chickens and puppies running around in the yard.

I’ve studied old-school Chinese characters, but on the mainland they use simplified ones. So I was straining to figure out what the large banners hung around the restaurant said. I recognized the one for “chicken”, but then noticed another one that i thought said “dog”. But I thought I was mis-reading.

I asked my pals. I wasn’t misreading–the character for “dog” is the same in both styles of Chinese writing.

The little puppies running around the restaurant were not there for the cuteness factor.

  3. “this is the holiday with all the good food right?”

All our holidays are excuses for food (except Yom Kippur, although even then you stave yourself in anticipation of a big meal). Theme of most holidays is “they tried to kill us, we won, let’s eat.”
