PS, Of course people are going to do it. But then why not just be above board, pay people decent salary, and give them decent pension. Overtime is usually paid at time and half or more — and is not recognized in the annual budget as ‘salary’, etc. It’s all slight of hand accounting. No wonder their budgets are constantly screwed. Of course I’d want the max. pension, but this is a ‘cheat’ of a way to get it. And who is to say that the OT was actually worked? With the LIRR, we heard that people ‘claimed’ OT for no-show jobs!
Denton, that was my approach when I used to go to Costco. If I couldn’t get there when the doors opened, I didn’t bother. I let my membership lapse a few years ago — just can’t stand buying that much stuff in bulk anymore, and kept coming home with things I didn’t need and hadn’t intended to buy (DVDs mostly) aka “Costco Syndrome”.
“And let’s not forget that public employees make relatively low salaries during their careers”
Not sure if this part is still true. Wage inflation has continued in the public sector as private sector wages flattened.
Look up the salaries for a particular state institution on seethroughnewyork sometime. You’ll see carpenters making more than most professors in some of the colleges and similar stuff. Maybe that’s not a bad thing but you get my drift….
legion, you crack me up re socialism and airlines. Before Carter, domestic airlines were heavily regulated and most foreign carriers were completely or partly owned by the guvment.
And flying was about as good as it could ever get, compared to today’s insanity.
Sometimes the free market ain’t all what it’s cracked up to be.
mm, re costco, we try and get there about half hour before the store opens. We go together and have a pretty systematized approach to shopping. Basically, have a list, shop, and get the f*ck out ASAP. The cashiers there really do move things along.
Maybe that’s what happens when you pay cashiers a decent salary.
Denton, Which Costco do you go to? The on 38th St. or Rockaway. Or are there more? The 38th Street one is pretty hairy.
hey rob, see, this sex thing is funny… if you don’t like one thing, keep it up until you find something you like?
Don’t like getting head? Try giving some. I understand there other options as well.
But if you wanna be all moral and shit about it, you might try and find someone you actually like first. Sometimes that helps.
How does one get the work rules of the MTA changed???
