  1. I’m asking because I get a lot of emails from numerous people that say “boycott x, y, and z” because they do “a, b, and c” and I’m beginning to wonder just how feasible this is because of so many company conglomerates and also just my being lazy. I know people who claim they’ll never support a cigarette company, yet they happily purchase Kraft products, which of course is owned by Phillip Morris. It’s gets messy and hard.

  2. I tend not to boycott companies. I think the one exception would have been companies doing business in SA during Apartheid. For that government to still function under such a system in the damn 90s was ridiculous.

My reason for not boycotting is because I would be starving and naked. Consumption would be near impossible for me if I took an economic stand on every that didn’t align with my core beliefs on how we should live. The only thing I do is try to consume only as much as I need. People need to realize that the luxuries, wealth and freedoms we enjoy will cost someone else these very same things. I would love to live my life purely from a “do no harm” stand point, but I’m too much a prima donna about some things to go that route.

  3. snappy, I’ve boycotted delta and northworst for about 10 years now. But that was for lousy service.

snappy, for political reasons very tough, it’s easy to boycott walmart because there are not any in immediate area. Otherwise I don’t have enough time for research. The media doesn’t provide nuances.

I’ve cancelled a case furniture order from Mitchel Gold because it was made in china, thought price was outrageous considering what labor cost there.

  4. 🙁 my grandmother just called me at work and told me that she is dieing and that i should be getting a check for 8000 dollars soon and asked for my current address for the beneficiary (?) papers and documents. she has known ive lived in brooklyn for the last 2 years but when i said brooklyn new york of COURSE she is like “oh my i wish you would move to a nice area, you shouldnt have to live that way.”

oooooh and im also getting her car

    *rob*

  5. ” Do you refuse to buy Reebock due to alleged former human rights issues?”

Herein lies the problem…”alleged” and “former.”

Weren’t we supposed to boycott Coors because they were anti-gay years ago or was it just because they had bad beer?

I don’t boycott anything unless I’ve specifically received bad service from them or they have a crap product.

  6. Serious question for all you PLUSAs, though it may be too early in the morning for this!

How many companies do you actively boycott for political reasons? Examples: Do you refuse to buy Reebock due to alleged former human rights issues? Will you not buy diamonds mined in South Africa and search out the so-called “conflict free” diamonds? The list could go on forever, but you get the picture. How hard do you find it to hold true to those boycotts, especially seeing how so many large companies hold numerous brands? What would you do if there was a company you boycott for a particular reason, say their contributions to campaigns of anti-abortion politicians, and then find that a product you just can’t do without has done the same thing? What ‘hill are you willing to die on?’

  7. Thanks, ishtar and Delepp. That’s helpful. I have been hopping on the bus #25 down to Nevins, but on the way home I walk from Atlantic. That is working fine now, but I will experiment once school starts. I am not a morning person, but maybe this will force me to get a earlier start in the am. It is definately WORTH IT!

BTW, I have been enjoying the walk home from Atlantic. It is really a little funny how I don’t walk around much. There is a lot of retail down there and its nice coming home that way….
