Pierre…if I were to stick to benson’s premise that money were no object I would have a condo in Hong Kong, a townhouse in Bangkok, a villa in Tuscany, Sicily and Naples and that place I like in merida….
Note the molding and casing details. All of these places would have to be architecturally interesting (except for Hong Kong because that is an oxymoron there.) I don’t want huge extravagant McMansions anywhere either.
And the last place I’d ever want anything is the Hamptons!!!!
And I think the rates to rent homes in Italy are fairly reasonable. I don’t know what property taxes are like. I also thought about property in Ireland around 1998 because I saw it starting to move. I’m Irish but the food and the weather would have been a deal killer!!!! Irish do not live on beer alone. 🙂
Catalonia in Spain is a great place and I think deals can be had all over Spain for property because it was looked upon as England’s “Florida!!!!”
Great question benson: Good ole PdT will take a nice villa in St. Tropez but a Haussmanian large apartment in the Marais district (Paris) would not be so bad either….ahh fantasy is a beautiful thing… really Gods gift to mankind 🙂 Hahaha
Money is an object, so i have second homes in Provincetown, MA and Bucks County, PA as well as a Center City, Philadelphia place with my partner. These places are 2-4 hours away, at most.
Over the past couple of decades, I’ve considered buying property in Asia (specifically Bangkok during the Baht crisis) and now, Mexico. I’d love a place in Tuscany. It’s my favorite place to travel to in the world (because of the food). But its not the fact that the property may be affordable but how often are you really going to use it. Right now I only use P-Town twice a year, and I don’t rent it out. I will retire between Bucks County and P-Town eventually.
I could go to Siena or Florence or Merida, Mexico for 6-8 weeks and stay somewhere nice for an amount of money that would be far less than what the yearly upkeep costs are likely to be for a property. No, it won’t be the same comforts as your own home but it’ll be far less of an ownership hassle. Actually, southern Italy is more desirable than northern because of the year-round weather. A friend has a place in Mykonos and loves it. I have yet to visit. Mexico is a quicker visit than Europe, obviously. We are doing some business in Uruguay and that looks like a great place as well.

I keep revisiting the idea of holiday homes every couple of years but, like DIBS points out, it’s a lots of hassle for something not used that much.
DIBS your post really illustrates our point about fantasy right? Ehh its fantastic!..LOL. Now will you narrow it down to at least one continent? :)))

I like your choices Benson, although I’m more of a hills of Tuscany guy…

Ditto;
From what I’ve seen of both, Como is much more beautiful. Hey, it works for George Clooney!
Benson – why Como instead of Garda?
