  1. Benson, yes, I was one of those wonderful “Kearney girls”, but I don’t know the current St. A’s Pastor. I hope I will meet him at the reunion.

Legion, thanks for the warning. I have followed some ugly, but always entertaining, political “discussions” on this thread. But come on now, if everyone thought the same way, what a miserably boring place this world would be!!!!

  2. “Apparently, one can get LEEDS points for doing things that don’t actually lower energy usage but are still “green”. I was pretty surprised to hear this.”

LEED is not just about lowering energy usage, altho of course that is a big part. It is more holistic, and I don’t buy organic food or shop at Whole Wallet. It covers water usage, interior air, hundreds of things. Including using recycled materials in building and recycling what has come down.

For example, one thing I found out recently is that to get higher certification in office buildings, you have to move smokers 25 feet away from the perimeter of the building. That keeps that sh*t out of the AC intakes, which keeps interior air cleaner with less filtration.

And because there is not enuf electricity in NYC, yes, there are perverse incentives. A number of new buildings (and some older ones) have been fitted/retrofitted with ‘ice plants’. The buildings use tons of electric at night when there is no stress on the grid to turn water into ice. THen in the day when demand is high, the ice is used to make AC for the building. Overall tho, it uses more electric since converting one form of energy (electric) into another (ice) is inefficient.

But to write off the entire LEED program as akin to bamboo counters and fair trade coffee is misguided.

I’m working on a multi-million dollar project right now that will replace a hundred motors with more efficient ones and have them run from super energy efficient devices called variable frequency drives, so electric conservation is still a big part of it.

  3. FYI, Bxgrl said she’d come back one of these days. She is taking an internet posting break, and getting some work done, artwork, as well as work work. Certain unmentionable names did not make posting here fun, at the time, but he didn’t chase her off the site. I, for one, don’t miss him one iota.

  4. M4L, I feel great. Thanks for asking. My doctor is surprised at the speed of my recovery. Next day after having an emergency C, I was up and about. I didn’t need/want painkillers.
I’m not powering down as much ice cream. Haven’t had any in two weeks. Eating very healthy cause a) I’m breastfeeding 2) I want to lose this baby weight.
