  1. “I liked Denton’s observation about pets being a connection to the natural world. I think connecting with/communicating with pets is good for people.”

    Me, too, dona.

A bunch of studies have shown that having a pet is healthy, physically and psychologically, and lowers your blood pressure, lessen anxiety and boosts your immune system.

They’re also great for the elderly, especially Alzheimer’s patients. The place my Dad was living in had pets brought in by a volunteer group. The old folks loved it a lot. Very soothing and cheering for the people being visited and wonderful to watch.

I guess I only get half the benefits from the visitor kitty.

  2. there’s a little foofy dog missing in soho. there’s been a 2 week long drama about it actually. she upped the reward to a few thousand dollars i think and somehow she managed to find security footage of a man and a woman holding her dog. she posted their pics on poles around with the caption that says, are these two people? maybe you didnt know he was missing? something along those lines.

  3. I liked Denton’s observation about pets being a connection to the natural world. I think connecting with/communicating with pets is good for people. I had two cats for 18 years and 20 years each, which I loved. I see the dividing line on pets assuming tremendous expense for medical procedures. A woman I know put me on her email update list, giving me the latest on the neurological surgery, treatment for a dog she has. Her daughter contributed 4,000 dollars of her saved money for it. I was at this girl’s graduation party and I “met” the dog who walks sideways for 4 or 5 steps then kind of falls down.

  4. quote:
“Bedbug-Infested Abercrombie Store at South Street Seaport Could Reopen Thursday”

well, the hollister store that was closed last weeek due to a massive bedbug infestion is back open today :-/ and packed to hilt with people. someone needs to dress up like a giant bedbug and protest outside that store and make people away of what they are going into.

  5. Slopefarm, my sister’s comment reflects how people have used domestic animals for centuries – for work, for utility – and also for companionship, but without anthropromorphizing them. A woman with a little dog in her handbag is not a natural progression from hunting dogs, sheepdogs, barn cats, etc (and I won’t be convinced by examples involving just the very wealthy or very powerful, like pharoahs and their cats – I just don’t thing that is a good reflection of how most people have actually used domestic animals over the years).

The progression of my post was not A therefore B, it was by the way A; now that I’m on the subject, why B? My weekend personal anecdote was not a predicate for the argument that treating domestic animals like humans is symptomatic of certain social issues.

  7. Thank you Legion for your creative and satisfying suggestion to ending the miserable pathetic life of my Dell Inspiron (what a name) laptop. I like that better than anything I came up with.

  8. “Not at all, CGar! How’s the CDog doing (and does jackal think feeding him a bacon cheeseburger make you an alienated misanthrope)?”

LOL, Slopey. I don’t think so — just a dog who knows a good bacon cheeseburger or bacon, egg & cheese sandwich or boneless spare ribs when someone puts them in front of her.
