thanks for the article,
after reading it, I’m not quite
coming to the same conclusion.
the author states that we can
sustain higer debt ratios,
but the goal must be to bring them down:
“The average structural deficit (ie, before interest payments) must swing from 4.3% of GDP in 2010 to a surplus of 3.7%. They must then maintain that surplus. A fifth of the rich world’s economies (including America and Britain) would need adjustments of around 10% of GDP or more”
the article states that a swing in deficits to the plus is required. we currently have projected yearly budget deficits of over a trillion dollars a year.
DIBS — If the union furloughs weren’t just a political power play by Patterson, it would be a totally different situation. The $250 million in potential savings were not part of a comprehensive reform of the budget (both revenues and expenditures).
As I said SEVERAL times yesterday, across-the-board % cuts are BAD business practice. Budget cutting with a sledgehammer instead of a scalpel. Programs that are most beneficial for and have the greatest impact on the society and economy are cut in equal measure with those programs that have less “value.”
Of course, these “values” have to be decided upon by our lawmakers. They have to make HARD choices. Not just farcical political flourishes…. especially ones that fail like Patterson’s most recent attempt. He wants to be able to say, “See, the unions don’t want to do their part!” When in actuality, this is pretty damn transparent.
Absolutely, the unions should “play ball” if it makes sense and there is a well-articulated REASON for the particular cuts. However, this is a hard argument to make if Albany isn’t even attempting to make reforms to the revenue side of the equation.
What, people go to whatever businesses are available to them. The Met is in fact doing a booming business, which is great. Soon there will be other businesses to which people might go. If they fail then you are right, Fulton Street is an incurable shithole but somehow I don’t think that will be the outcome.
Why are you so opposed to a shithole being improved?
“What was blocked is violation of contract and furloughs – which was really just a politcal move by governor(perhaps strategically valid) to pressure for a budget from the legislature. ”
Yep a beautiful move by the Governor, now he has leverage to start laying people off.
What the Retards don’t realize is THE STATE IS ******ING BROKE DUMBASS!!!!!!

New York can print money also, right???!!!!
“And when contract is up, probably won’t get any raise for awhile – but that is different issue than best staffing levels. ”
