Sort of, Lechacal, with the understanding that my use of the word ‘power’ is not limited to obvious things like being a government official for example.
Montrose, If you decide to make it to my neck of the woods some day (Ditmas Park or Kensington) to take some pics for BOTD or Walkabouts, let me know. I’ll walk around with you.
“But I still have to insist on my action-based definition.”
Well I suppose it makes sense to some degree. 100% of us pre-judge people based on their color, whether we admit it to other people or not. And there is no way that all of that pre-judging is positive (some of it is positive, some if it is negative). So 100% of us have at least some kind of negative pre-judging based on color. So we’re all racists using my definition. I guess what you’re saying is that sure everyone is racist using my definition but what really matters is whether you actually do something bad with it, and you can only do something bad with it if you have the power to do so, therefore only people with the power to do bad things based on their negative views of people of a particular color can be called racists.
Rob, re tax refund loans, they charge mob rates. That is the shady part. NOT recommended. It only takes 2 weeks to get your money from the IRS if you filed electronically. Otherwise it takes a month or so.
Rob — Seriously, those loans are CRAZY. Most of them have interest rates like 400%. What if the IRS finds something to delay your return? You won’t be paying the interest and fees for your anticipated May 25th payback date… the interest and fees will keep adding and adding and adding until you *actually* pay it back.
Don’t do it. Give handjobs at a dirty movie theater instead. You won’t lose any money to interest and fees AND you’ll get some exercise.
Since everyone is in a cheery mood, I’m going to ruin it. Benson, I still take exception to your comments to me in last Friday’s Goth House thread about my BOTD column.
Jon wanted another column from me that had to do with architecture, but wasn’t one of my long tomes. I agreed, and I, me, myself came up with the BOTD, including the name and the format. Jon trusts my judgement, and has never questioned anything I chose to feature on the column, except to ask me to improve some of my photography, a while back. Turns out I wasn’t using a certain program correctly, which is why shots were fuzzy. But all is well, now.
I purposely structure the BOTD to feature a different neighborhood every day, so as to feature as much of our great borough as possible. However, the choices are limited more or less to neighborhoods that I can get to by walking or subwaying to easily. I don’t have time, or a car, to get around to places like Greenwood Hts, Williamsburg, or even Bay Ridge and Ditmas Park. I would love to be able to have BOTD’s from all of these places, but it is not possible at this point.
I also try to write about buildings that I can easily research, as to architect, date, and a factoid or two. Sometimes I can get away with less, but I want to give people as much info as I can. That’s why landmarked areas are easier, and buildings in them show up more often. My personal goal is to put up the thread in less than an hour, I ain’t making big bucks here. All that to say is that Jon is not micromanaging me, and I have the freedom to choose what I post. He is not going to tell me to feature certain kind of buildings over others, certain neighborhoods over others. You are the only person to complain about any part of the BOTD. Sorry, but it is NOT going to change.
What — Trust me, I know how to use it. I just hope I have a buddy to tell me to “chill” when I pull it out (no homo).

1. You better know how to use it!
2. You better be prepared to use it!
3. You better be prepared with the consequences!

Is that kind of what you were getting at?
