I think the bottom line on this one is that we all have our own hot buttons (admittedly some more than others) and, just like in life away from this blog, we approach some issues with certain baggage that’s not easy for us to drop (ie my insistence on discussing racial profiling in response to the conversation about the Arizona law). We will all see things differently, and that’s a good thing. Perhaps what you are actually taking issue with wrt Benson is the manner in which he addresses some issues? Not putting words in your mouth, just guessing here? Am I off-base?
To me Benson jumped in that thread in the beginning with to me a very What type of attack. The attack was not about the thread itself – but because there was no thread on that homeless man left for dead on street in Queens.

We’ll argue with him, but we don’t expect him to change the blog based on what we want. He covers what he wants, and he determines what he’s interested in. He lets MM write what she wants because he likes what she says and shares her interests. It is his blog and he has every right to do that.”
