You are exactly right, and I was talking about that with some of my colleagues last Saturday. The Jesuits believed in a classic liberal arts education, and, at that time, they tried to steer us to schools like Georgetwon, Fordham and Holy Cross. The highest ideal was Georgetown or Fordham Law school. I would say that well over half my year eventually went on to law. I was considered an oddball for pursuing engineering.
Nowadays they don’t stress these institutions as much. In the recent years, about 1/3 of the class goes on to Ivy League schools.
As I mentioned above, Scalia went to our arch-rival, Xavier.
Love him or hate him, Scalia, in his eagerness and uber-ability to take on intellectual issues, is a product of Jesuit schooling.
Regis is the Styvesant High School for Catholics and a fabulous boys high school. Benson, did you find that many of the boys are now lawyers? That training, rigourous history, language, classics, tends to be the perfect nurturing ground for lawyers and judges (priests, historians, journalists, media). Where did Antoine Scalia go to high school? Wasn’t it Regis? There was nothing exactly like that for girls, but Countess Moore had a similiar curriculum. I had 4 years of Latin (no Greek). The interesting thing is that you went on to pursue a scientific higher education. Before you, many of the boys were steered away from non-Catholic colleges and seemed to be steered toward careers in those fields – i.e. training for Supreme Court judges.
Gemini, the Jesuits are the Church’s intellectual warriors (though they had their run ins with the Vatican over the last few decades).
Re: What,
I missed a lot of the What’s former career on Brownstoner, but what amazed me was how intensely he was missed by st everyone. His return was met with the joy of the Prodigal Son. And now all appears to be right with the world with people kicking the shit out of one another.
DIBS and the What – Lex Luther and Superman – (Don’t ask me who’s who.)
I think $100 is bit excessive for HS graduating. Unless he was a poor student and really struggled to finish.
“I;m liking the COTDs and HOTDs in philly more than in Brooklyn”

Donatella;
