    Winston: Does the Brotherhood exist?

O’Brien: That, Winston, you will never know. If we choose to set you free when we have finished with you, and if you live to be ninety years old, still you will never learn whether the answer to that question is Yes or No. As long as you live it will be an unsolved riddle in your mind.

no, i remember it well. (well vaguely well enough) my biological mother used to take me into the city between the ages of like 4 and 9 to buy drugs (or perhaps to do drugs). she once left me in an open fire hydrant with a bunch of strange poverty-stricken children somewhere in hells kitchen and disappeared for a few hours :-/ but she would always buy me rainbow chocolate cigarettes and that made me happy and kept my mouth shut about where we were. when i eventually told my grandmother this as an adult she said that she was going into the city for her methadone, but i dont really believe that since im sure she could have gone to a clinic in nj if she wanted to.
